When Matt and I got Mia in 2004, we signed a contract stating that we would breed her back to one of the seller's stud dogs. Under this contract, the seller would get first pick of the litter, we would get 2nd, and then we would alternate picks. Once Mia was old enough, we bred her with a stud dog named Elvis (I know, I know) and she didn't take (big surprise). This time around, we bred her with a black-and-tan shiba named Kuroichi (better) on February 10th, 2008.
Matt and I were anxious to know if Mia was pregnant this time, but we didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars at the vet for blood tests or sonograms. Luckily, we work at a university! Matt is pretty good friends with the University's vet (Scott), and our exercise science department just-so-happens to have a sonogram machine, so for the price of a 6-pack, we were allowed some free-time on their instrument.
On March 11th, we were very pleased to learn that Mia is indeed pregnant! With the ultrasound we were able to see 3 puppies, all with little hearts beating. Matt also managed to take a great video of the sonogram where you can hear Scott explaining what you are seeing (yes, we are biology geeks!). Play the video below to watch!
So now we have approximately 5 weeks to wait until Mia has her puppies. Her due date is April 11th! We'll keep you posted!
Happy Easter! (Yes, that is really a picture of Mia with her tongue out, Matt was giving her a treat). Today begins Week 7 of Mia's pregnancy. This week the puppies will continue to grow and develop, and poor Mia should start shedding her abdomen hair and finally start to look to pregnant. Although to Matt and I, she looks bigger every day! We were both surprised that she seemed to get wider in the rib cage/lower abdomen area rather than lower abdomen swelling first. Unfortunately, this week also means we are to stop all roughhousing and jumping. Hopefully that shouldn't be too hard, as she's been mellowing out a little more each week.
